Community Support Builds Future Club
A huge fundraising effort has given the Orewa Surf Life Saving Club a major boost, bringing its long awaited community hub closer to reality.
A cheque for $545,764.51 was unveiled to loud cheers at the club on 5 February as supporters celebrated a huge step forward in the redevelopment project.
The funds were raised through the auction of a home built with the generous support of Ross & Elaine Morley, of GJ Gardner Homes, Rodney East, in Milldale.
More than 100 suppliers and tradespeople donated their time and resources to make the project possible.
The home was sold by national auctioneer Travers Smyth and marketed by Marcia Noda and Justin Brassfield, from Bayleys Hibiscus Coast.
Ross said he had a long standing relationship with the Surf Club and didn’t hesitate to get involved when asked. The new Community Hub will be a great community centre, and it’s going to be wonderful for the community to have such a fantastic venue on the foreshore.
Orewa Surf Life Saving Club President, Faron Turner was thrilled with the result. We’re humbled by the 100 trades that have come together to build this “generosity house” with us. It shows the support we have as an organisation, and a charity, saving lives and also educating our young ones about water safety.
Orewa Surf Life Saving Club Chairman, Jon Copeland said the donationwas a huge step toward their goal of a fit for purose clubhouse as the current building was no longer suitable, expecially with the Coast’s rapid population growth. It will give our members more space, allow us to properly store rescue equipment and improve rescue facilities. A lot of our work involves first aid on the beach and with the new facilties we won’t be jammed in anymore. Our lifeguards will have new bunk rooms, and our lifesaving equipment currently stored in containers and garages will finally have a proper home.
