Age Group Opportunities
Junior Opportunities
Across the Junior program there are opportunities for progression through different equipment usage, competitions, learning and participation carnivals.
200 Metre Patch
‘Patching’ is the opportunity for a junior to progress from using a boogie board to a knee board. We run patching sessions at the start of the season depending on conditions. Stay informed on this through the Team Reach app, or talking to coaches. Please refer to our Junior Policies and Guidelines for more detailed information on this process.
Competitive Lifesaving and Carnivals
Competitions and carnivals are a great way to practice skills and meet junior members from other clubs. We take pride in wearing our Orewa Club uniform and enjoy the atmosphere and challenge of heading to different beaches to participate in events. Detailed information about events is provided through beach briefings and through our Team Reach app once you are a member.
Competition entry fees are paid by the competitor using our online entry payment system with Kindo. See our webpage about Kindo registration.

Weekday competition squad
Additional Squad training is offered throughout the week for our older Juniors U12 - U14 age groups, who are competitive and/or are keen athletes. The weekday sessions offer techniques and fitness to Junior members and athletes who are keen to advance their skills and apply them in a more competitive environment. Your child must have already achieved their 200m patch to participate. Please chat to your age group coach to asses if this would be appropriate for your child’s development.
2024-2025 Squad Schedule:
Water Skills Training
-Monday/Wednesday/Friday 4.45pm - 6.00pm
Land Skills Training
-Thursday 4.45pm - 5.45pm
Pool Champs
During the winter season, members aged 10+ can participate in pool based lifesaving training and carnivals. This is a great way to stay fit over the colder months plus enjoy learning lifesaving skills in the pool. Your child needs a base level of swimming ability as the types of activities include 50m swim, diving down to retrieve a brick, tube rescues, swimming and diving under obstacles, to name a few. Kids love it as its dynamic and fun. There are additional fees for swim land usage and carnival participation.
Rookie Program
The Rookie Program is for Juniors aged 13 who are preparing to become a surf lifeguard or patrol support. It is an opportunity for our young members to go through the same incredible experiences, creating friendships for life while giving back to the community! The program runs alongside the Sunday training and offers an opportunity to experience being a lifeguard while learning valuable lifesaving skills. Rookie Lifeguarding is a fantastic bridge between Junior Surf and lifeguarding and sets young people up to transition into the role of active service with ease developing great members of our club.
For further details on the program, please read through the Rookie Lifeguard Award Program & Resources on the SLS Northern Region website. If this is something your child is interested in, chat to your U14 age group coach/management to sign up.
Junior Summer Camp
Every year during the summer holidays we take the opportunity to relocate to Ruakaka for a week. This is a family camp and creates a wonderful environment for members to bond and build on their skills. It’s a relaxed way to get to know each other, make new and lasting friendships, and allow the children to familiarise themselves with a different beach and surf. This year’s Family Camp dates: 2-5 Jan 2025. For more information please see the Junior Ruakaka Summer Camp memo.
